More Charges For Man Accused Of Tantalus Slayings
HONOLULU — The gunman accused of killing three people at the Tantalus Lookout faces more criminal charges after a grand jury on Wednesday indicted Adam Mau in a separate stabbing incident involving a prison guard.
This summer will mark two years since Mau was arrested in a triple-homicide case. He is currently being held at the state mental hospital after a panel found him unfit to stand trial.
It is unclear how the new indictments will hold up since the more serious murder charges are still pending.
Mau was being held at the Oahu Community Correctional Center on murder charges when authorities said he tried to stab a guard in the eye.
A grand jury returned indictments of attempted assault in the first and second degree, which Mau, 25, will have to answer to at some point.
“The suspect is extremely dangerous and claims to have serious mental issues in this particular case while he was at OCCC, he tried to stab an ACO (Adult Corrections Officer) and could have caused serious bodily injury,” Deputy Prosecutor Vickie Kapp said.
Mau’s defense attorney said his client already faces 19 other more serious charges related to the 2006 shooting death of a Kapahulu couple, Colleen and Jason Tagomori, and a Honolulu cab driver, Mahn Nguyen.
Mau was found unfit to stand trial by a panel of doctors. He is said to be suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and is expected to undergo another mental review later this summer. The prosecutor’s office said the next status hearing on the murder charges is set for September.
Mau’s family who has made money off of development in Waikiki has already settled out of court with the murder victims’ families.
Defense attorney Brooke Hart said Mau, who suffers from delusions, is being treated with medication.
