Moanalua Students Urge Drivers To Stop U-Turns

HONOLULU — Students at Moanalua Middle School on Thursday rallied in front of their school, urging motorists to think twice before making sudden and potentially dangerous U-turns.

Many parents make quick U-turns on Mahiole and Ma’alahi streets after dropping off their kids. So students, teachers and police gathered to raise awareness about safety.

Making a U-turn in a residential area is not illegal, but it is illegal when a car blocks the crosswalk, police said.

Rep. Glenn Wakai said that in 30 minutes time earlier in the month, he saw 30 U-turns, which caused traffic jams and posed a danger for the students.

“They’ll stop and make sudden U-turns and when kids are crossing, it’s really hard to cross especially when you don’t know when they are going to turn,” student Alex McDougle said.

Wakai said he is working with the Honolulu Police Department and the city to install a “no U-turn” sign there. Police said a sign could be put up in about a month.
